Pontiac Trans Am 1979 Description

Up for sale today is myvery cool'79 Trans Am WS6! This unique car combines the "survivor" look that is so popular today, long with a stout drivetrain that was built with serious track duty in mind. It startedlifeas a rare 400/4 speed coupe with the WS6 and W72 packages. It is Nocturne Blue with the light blue Deluxe Hobnail interior. Unfortunately the original drivetrain was lost some years ago, ut it has been replaced by a 411ci, am Air IV-headed Pontiac motor by SD Performance, Tremec TKO transmission, nd a built 8.5" rear end. Full details of the build are shown below. This car runs extremely strong and has beenvery reliablefor the three years I have owned it.I originally bought it foroccasional trips to thedrag strip, ut have onlymade it to the track twice in three years. At this point I'm not getting much use out of the car and it just lost its garage space to my wife's new Vette, o it's time for someone else to enjoy it.

For some interesting reading on this car, heck out the links below. The car was previously featured in High Performance Pontiac's Pavement Pounders Shootout, nd the article talks about the dragstrip performance. There is also some info on the engine build at SD Performance's web site. If the links don't work you can Google search "Mark Doyal Trans Am" and click the first couple links that come up. Mark was the previous owner, ut I haven't changed anything on the car other than replacing the worn out mufflers and fixing up the interior a little bit.

Please note that this car was primarilybuilt for drag and autocross use. Itwas built to runon pump gas and Ido drive it on the street frequently, ncluding some 50+ mile trips in 100 degree heat, utmost people would not consider it very "streetable". It has a long-duration, olid flat tappet cam. It is very loud, as a choppy idle, nd has limited low-end torque due to the size of the cam. It only pulls about 6" of vacuum at idle, hich reduces the amount of assist from the power brake booster. The car sits quite a bit lower than stock, o the exhaust will sometimesbottom out on speed bumps or very rough road. The A/C is not installed, he compressor/condenser/ bracketsare all missing, nd the blower motor needs to be replaced. Fuel economy is poor, ingle digits in the city and maybe 10-12 mpg on the highway. The car does pass Texas state inspections without a problem, nd is currently tagged and inspected.

I strongly recommend that serious buyers look at the car in person.I will be happy to take you for a test ride. Please call George at 361-537-7704 to make an appointment, r if you have any questions about the car. It is located in Spring Branch, X which is about 25 miles North of San Antonio.

Mileage is showing 36,120 which previous owner claimed is actual. I have no way to verify this. It does seem like a low-mileage car considering the minimal wear on the interior, nd how well the doors open and close. Mileage will go up slightly due to test drives.

Full details of the car:

Body:

Overall it is very straight and rust free. It appears to be all original sheet metal with no accident damage evident. The doors open and close very well and do not sag. The panel gapsand spoiler alignment are above average. It has not been cut up at all, ith the exception of some holes drilled in the trunk floor for the battery relocation, ill switch, nd a nitrous bottle bracket. Front and rear glass is good, ide windows have some scratches from going up and down.

Paint:

Appears to be original. It is very thin and faded with primer showing innumerous places, nd bare metal in a few spots. Decals are pretty much intact but are faded, nd the hood bird is starting to bubble. See the pictures for more detail, took close ups of the worst spots. I actually receive numerous compliments on the original look,so I have never wanted to repaint it. However, twill need to begaraged or covered topreventfurther deterioration. Or you could try to spray clearcoat over it like they do on "Fast and Loud".

Interior:

Overall is in nice presentable condition, ut not show quality. Dash is original and free of cracks. A protective dash mat has been installed to protect it from the sun. Gauge cluster looks great, riginal tach has been disconnected and there is an aftermarket tach attached to the steering column. Additional gauges have been added in place of two of the A/C vents (Fuel Pressure and Water Temp). Seats are original with no rips, ut they have some fading on the top from sun exposure. Door panels are original and look pretty good. Console is original and is in fair condition with a few scratches and some aftermarket speaker grills on the sides. Headliner, arpet, nd package tray have been replaced with new aftermarket pieces. The driver's power window works well, assenger side motor works but the windowlikes to getstuck in the up position, ower lockswork sometimes. A Retrosound stereo has been installed and it has aux, SB, nd SD card inputsfor hooking up an iPod or equivalent. It is functional although sound quality isn't great. I prefer to listen to the engine!

Engine:

1973 Pontiac 400 block, .155" bore x 3.79" stroke, 11 ci, oss pistons dished for 9.5:1 compression, agle forged rods, tock 400 crank (offset ground .040" and cut to BBC rod journal size), bolt steel main caps.
