Pontiac GTO 1969 Description

Thanks for stopping by our auction for a very rare 1969 Pontiac GTO RAM AIR III.

This is the real deal one owner black plate matching numbers 366HP RAM AIR California car that will surely appreciate every day. Buy it now and pat yourself on the back later. And have a blast in the meantime while your friends play catch up. Just like in 1969.

Is it really RARE?

A lot of folks claim a particular car is rare for some obscure reason or another. The Pontiac GTO is a well known oft measured investment grade vehicle. Many publications have been dedicated to the subject and many experts exist. We’re not experts but we do know that in 1969 there were 64851 GTO Coupes built and only 1986 of those were RAM AIR III Automatic cars. Less than one half of 1% of the total production was dedicated to the factory hotrods. Very few survive today outside of museums.

The Specifics

PHS DOCUMENTED RAM AIR III CAR.

The Pontiac Historical Society is the de facto source for Pontiac records. We provided just the VIN and were given a 20 page report outlining the exact production dates and options of this rare GTO. We compared the PHS report to the car and found an exact match down to the still present OEM HD shocks. This is one of the real legendary GTO’s. Not a disguised LeMans or a pumped up base model wanna be it’s the real ground pounding terror of 1969.

This GTO is exactly what the customer ordered. “As fast as I can get with an AT and AC.” We found matching casting date and VIN numbers exactly where they should be. Untouched for 46 years.

Casting numbers decode to December 16 1968. The car was purchased on Thursday evening February 13 1969 from Haskell Pontiac in Culver City California. The story we have is that Uncle Ken was waiting when the transporter arrived at the dealership. Within 24 hours this King of the street made it’s Friday night debut on Main Street in Huntington Beach. It was said that Uncle Ken didn’t race much. Just knowing he had the big guns was enough.

One Southern California owner from new with a very interesting local story. Original pink slip in owner’s name a lifelong resident of Huntington Beach California aka Surf City USA.

Original California Black Plates are still on the car and match the title.

ONLY 81K miles from new.

Original seat upholstery and trim panels as delivered. Fresh carpets headliner and package tray.

Factory optioned with Air Conditioning. The AC system has been cleaned upgraded to current standards and blows COLD.

OEM “Code M” Midnight Green Metallic the hottest color of 1969 has had one quality respray is clear coated color sanded and buffed and still wears original paint in some jambs.

HIDDEN HEADLIGHT CAR with correct OEM T-3 Headlamps. That famous GTO look all from the factory carefully removed cleaned serviced and replaced. All completely functional and all correct to this car since 1969.

ENDURA FRONT BUMPER and Chrome Rear Bumper were both reconditioned. The rear rechromed.

YZ CODE 400 CID 366 HP RAM AIR III BLOCK.

This heavy hitter was well documented as being under rated on horsepower to keep the GM brass happy. Every code and Pontiac stamping is in place. A recent engine rebuild concentrated on 2015 driveability. Little wear was found. Valvetrain and other upgrades for unleaded fuel were completed as well as seals and gaskets. The fuel tank was pulled cleaned and reinstalled.

10 BOLT POSITRACTION REAR END. The storied 10 Bolt POSI Diff. Hit the loud pedal as hard and often as you want and this pumpkin will handle all that horsepower and torque and reward you with two sets of matching slabs of rubber. Plant that pedal light the tires and hold on.

NO SILLY VINYL ROOF

The vast majority of these cars seem to have the funky vinyl roof which always traps water and creates a perfect environment for rust. Uncle Ken knew what looked great and saw no reason to follow a fleeting fad.

ORIGINAL SOFT RAY GLASS

1970’s era California smog check decals still adorn the windscreen. Full Soft Ray glass still intact and correct to this car. Some minor delamination at windshield.

UPGRADES

As was common “back in the day” guys loved to pull off this and that installed at the factory and “upgrade” those parts to gain a performance edge. Everything from headers manifolds carbs to entire powertrains were swapped out in the hopes of going a bit faster next time. Today we call that mods I think.

This GTO was modestly upgraded as follows

WHEELS and TIRES.

Standard to this car (and included) are the 14” Rally II wheels originally delivered. Widened Pontiac 15” Rally II wheels are installed with period correct non OEM tires. Correct black top chrome lug nuts are in place

A factory style tachometer was installed in-dash.

An Aluminum radiator and overflow tank was installed. The brass radiator in place on this car is included.

100’s of rubber parts including hoses gaskets belts seals etc. were replaced.

The brake system was serviced.

Flowmaster 40 mufflers installed. Nice and original pipes and resonators remain in place. New hangers with fresh rubber installed.

A complete service was performed. Oil Filter Plugs wires cap rotor points PCV and wearable parts were updated with new OEM or exact copy.

THE DRIVE

Settling in behind the wheel of this legendary Goat you can feel the promise of 1969 coming on strong. Big horsepower fully functional RAM AIR III scoops in your line of sight with a boost of cold RAM AIR III at your right knee.

Firing the big 400 returns a welcome huff and the sweet and nasty lope of hot cam settling in for a warm up. Driving is like stepping back into 1969. Everyone wants to check you out You still have the baddest ride around.

The powerband radio works fine. The speakers are fresh and clear so tune in your favorite station buckle up and own the road in a real 1969 GOAT.

Note in the last three pictures that a complete inspection was done on the car the verify it’s special provenance.
