Pontiac GTO 1965 Description

A real-deal 1965 Pontiac GTO convertible in the correct colors, Hurst four on the floor, and an enhanced V8 heart. A machine like this is built for show and go, and so it will never disappoint.We could start off by telling you how rare these second-year GTO convertibles are, but you probably already know that Ford basically sold more Mustangs in a week than Pontiac produced droptop GTOs in 1965. Refinished in a vivid coat of its factory-correct R2 Montero Red, it looks terrific in the sunlight, which is exactly what a car like this was born to do. You can really tell there was investment that went well beyond the pant to make sure the body was looking its best and the big chrome bumpers shine like mirrors. But it's more than just the big picture on this one. As you get up close, the details are right, too. The new-for-1965 vertical stack headlights shine like jewels; all the trim is straight; correct GTO badging is on every side; and the intricate tail panel is complete. The whole package sits on a staggered set of American Racing wheels, which give this drop top some added aggression over its brothers. There's a good reason for that, but more on that in a moment.Beneath the black folding power roof is a beautiful black interior. There's more evidence of a quality restoration the moment you lay eyes on the bucket seats. We suspect they were recovered recently, because they feel so nice, and they are crisp right down to the correct arrowhead emblem embossed into each one. Matching door panels with correct GTO emblems in the center and deep dark carpeting make this a true classic muscle car experience. Aiming for a more European feel in the GTO, Pontiac designers gave it a wood-grained dashboard with the round rally gauge cluster. This includes a tach, which is a very nice feature considering your right hand will likely never leave the Hurst shifter. The whole car is a nice execution of very original with some nice improvements. A great example is the factory AM/FM radio has a set of new auxiliary readouts right below it.Another great upgrade is under the hood. That's a 455 cubic-inch V8 filling the engine bay. GTOs would have to wait until the 70s to get this kind of displacement, but this one has been enhanced to be a true fire-breathing second-year Goat. But the enchantments don't stop there. It has the mean Offenhauser intake that accepts two Edelbrock four-barrel carburetors. So you know it can inhale better than just about any other car out there. And it can exhale with serious authority thanks to new headers that connect to the rumbling dual exhaust. But look beyond the size of the V8 and the shine of the valve covers, and you'll see it was built to be reliable with everything from a new water pump to an MSD ignition. So you can fire this one up whenever the mood strikes you.
