Pontiac GTO 1966 Description
Here is a genuine and highly desirable 1966 GTO 360 HP Tri-Power Convertible automatic with full PHS documentation. This car was last run in 1989 and has been garaged ever since. The car is very well optioned for a 1966 car (see PHS report and build sheet for full details).
Per the previous owner, the original engine was rebuilt and bored to 30 over. About 1,500 miles later it developed a knock. The original engine was removed and a 1967 400 was put in the car. This motor seized on its first start and the car was put away until this July when I bought it from the second owner.
Here’s what I have. The original 389 YR block which turns, but has surface rust in the cylinder bores from sitting 27 years under a work bench. The original 093 heads. The original intake and tri-power set up. The original distributor, water pump, alternator, brackets and pulleys. However, I am not a GTO expert so take a good look at the pictures. Everything is sold as is. The original transmission is long gone. The car currently has a Buick TH-400. The transmission cross member was moved rearward to make room for the longer transmission. I also have a 1970 Pontiac TH-400 that comes with the car.
This car is very solid and largely unmolested but every system and every part of this car will require total restoration. The fully boxed frame has surface rust but I don’t see any rot. The trunk floor has some surface rust but no holes. The front and rear floor pans are very solid. There are some small rust holes in the floor on the front drivers side. The windshield was shot by a pellet gun and has a pea sized chip as a result. I believe that the car will need the lower parts of both rear quarters replaced. Also the inner and outer rocker panel on the driver’s side. All the other body panels will need work to remove dents and rust. The previous owner said the front left side was sideswiped when the car was parked. The door and fender on that side are not original to the car. I believe that the right side fender was also replaced at some time in the past based on red paint under the platinum paint.
Overall this is a very original car that deserves a full restoration. The main picture of this listing shows the car before I removed the stainless trim to check for rust. I also have a radiator and other small parts not shown.I didn’t take most of this apart so some parts that are shown may not even be from this car. When I picked up the car I took everything from the garage that looked Pontiac, and most of what you see was in the trunk. It also comes with two additional Rally I wheels, two additional steel wheels, the 1967 400 block that is in the car, the keys, original owners manual, the PHS documentation, two repair manuals, and an outdoor car cover.
The car has a clear PA title in my name. Feel free to call me on 484-643-6471 with any questions. The car is located in south east PA if you or a representative would like to view the car in person. I will be available to help whoever you choose to transport the car but please take into account all the parts that are off the car, the extra transmission, and the four additional wheels that go with the car, so please plan accordingly. Note: title shows 136,000 miles but odometer shows 103,689.
