According to Hitman's Official Trans Am Information Site, The Indy 500 race choose the 1980 Turbo Trans Am to pace the race in 1980. This was the first year that the same car paced both the Indy 500 and the Daytona 500. Pontiac made 5,700 of these cars to replicate the car used to pace The Indianapolis 500.
The 1980 Y85 Turbo Pace Car Trans Ams were similar to the 1979 10th Anniversary Trans Am in the paint scheme. The Pace Car had white lower body paint with charcoal upper body paint offset by a tri-color body accent stripes. The decals used were now the larger 5-color turbo hood bird and "Turbo 4.9" on the bulge on the hood designed to accommodate the turbo-charger and 3-light system for the turbo-boost. The Indy 500 emblem was located on the side fenders and the rear tail spoilers. The optional "Indy 500 Pace Car" door decals or the "22nd Annual Daytona 500 Mile Race" door decals were an extra option.
The interior was a custom Oyster vinyl seats with hobnail inserts and the bird was embroidered on the center of the rear seats and on the door panels. The rest of the interior was an Oyster white with charcoal grey dash and center console. A Special ETR AM/FM Cassette with seek-and-scan features, a digital display, and red dash lights rounded out the interior. The car came with the Turbo-charged 301 motor and was standard with the WS6 handling package set off but the 15x8 inch turbo rims finished in white. The car also came fully equipped with power windows, power locks, A/C, and more.
Condition Report:
This vehicle has been stored for years. It includes a clear title in the owner's name as shown, as well as the data plate and even the original door sticker. The VIN number is under the windshield as shown. It appears fairly complete and original aside from one repaint.
The interior is complete but shows some wear consistent with a vehicle with 90,000 original miles and needs a good cleaning as well. Note the steering wheel has a rip in the leather as shown. There is no broken glass but there are some scratches in the glass. The trim is also all there. It does not have the original AM FM radio or what went into the console in place of the wood. The package tray appears to have been modified for larger speakers. Other that those minor modifications, it appears to original.
The floor pans, trunk and rocker panels are excellent as you can see. The doors, hood and trunk lid are also very nice. It is consistent with a vehicle that probably did not see a winter. The paint is nice but not quite show quality. It was professionally done a fairly long time ago. We could find a few flaws but you had to look to find them.
Mechanically, it starts well and drives straight, and brakes as expected. The engine is quiet and smooth and has had a recent tune up. The turbo charger was rebuilt at the tune of $500 years ago. However with the lengthy storage, we recommend draining the gasoline and doing a general check of the brakes, cooling system, and other mechanicals. In addition, the tires are in super shape but old. The A/C and fuel gauge do not work.
To summarize, it is our opinion that this vintage Pontiac Turbo Trans Am Official Pace Car would be a very nice addition to anyone's collection. This rare find would make a great project for the Pontiac T/A enthusiast, father and son or weekend mechanic.
