Chevrolet Corvair 1960 Description
Found this early 1960 Corvair sedan in a dry garage in Cohocton, NY, where it sat since it was last registered in 1985. Planned to get it on the road but I now realize that I can't accomplish all of the automotive projects I have (see my Corvair van for sale as well). This car appears to be completely intact. The rear seat folds down, and if you know Corvair engines, you'll notice other unusual features on this one. The choke setup is different than later models, fender walls are different, battery on passenger side, and most obviously the air intake setup is different. Also there is a mechanism to lock and release the engine compartment lid from under the dash. The car has a PowerGlide automatic transmission. I put 100,000 miles in the description because I can't remember how many are on the odometer, but I think it's well under that. The body is nice and straight, all windows go up and down easily. Paint looks like a rub out and wax is all you need. Went over the body with a magnet and could find no evidence of body filler. Trim is very nice, front bumper has some blemishes but those might rub out with chrome polish. Headliner is intact, interior is musty, seats look good and have seat covers. I started to take off the front seat cover and found no problem underneath, so perhaps the owner put them on early to protect the seats. The tires are old bias ply narrow white walls; they hold air and roll around just fine and would no doubt get you around the block, but I would not rely on them to drive. Dog dish hubcaps in place on all four, and even a hubcap on the spare!
I have not tried to start the car, but I did put in fresh oil before I ran out of time to pursue this project. The engine turns by hand with a wrench and compression feels right. Should not be a big deal to get this running.
This is a good looking very early Corvair, a real time capsule. If you're looking for a fun project that doesn't need paint or body work, this is a great candidate.
