I listed it last week for auction and buy now, so this'll be the last week I'm going to list it before I try to locally. I've received dozens of questions and had over 35 watchers so I'm certain there's interest out there -just need to find the right buyer looking for a great cruiser car. Up for sale is my 1968 California Special. I'm willing to answer all questions, and already have answered about twenty questions. Stunning car that everyone asks about, but I have too many projects going already this winter for this one to keep garage space. Photos go from complete, to when taken apart (somewhat chronologically) so you can get an idea of the restoration process.
Look at the attached MartiReport, fresh paint was color-matched for Ford original Lime Gold from the factory. Correct black interior. Real fiberglass hood, scoops and rear trunk. Period correct '65 T-bird taillights. Correct fog lights, correct grille, period-correct 289 V8 engine (I believe a 67, that's what the tag says, rebuilt before I bought it) and intake. Tires are in great condition. It's a real find, and is in great shape inside and out.
I have hundreds of photos as I have restored it. Took second place at 2016 FordFest in Louisville, KY. Arrived poorly primed but with a straight body from Oregon (third owner, obviously originally a CA car). I sanded, re-primed, painted and waxed. Was very little rust in underbody, and no bondo on the sheet metal. Factory car (no added AC or horrible speakers cut everywhere in side panels) and with a little love could be a real Concours contender. But of course, as it is, as a fabulous weekend cruiser to take to shows. A little nicer than a daily driver with fresh paint, but not 100% original (nuts, bolts, new paint ect.).
I am selling because I have a '69 Torino we're putting a 429 tunnel ram into and need some funds. I was enjoying another 66 fastback mustang build, but this 1968 mustang is just too time consuming to restore 100% back to original with these other projects in the garage. Currently the car is in storage, but I'm happy to get it out whenever you prefer. PLEASE email if there's interest. Email for additional photos please, if serious -below is what needs to be done to make it a showroom car. Wouldn't take $2000 more, but I have multiple other projects and no more garage space.
Electrical needs work (headlights sometimes fade out, could be bad fuse or coil or?).
The center console on the floor is somewhat rough. Works fine of course, but needs 'garage door' that is missing. I would suggest installing a new one, or painting the old.
There's no extra spare in the trunk.
Reverse lights don't come on.
Oil temp gauge isn't working but the fuel and speedometer obviously do.
Turn signals in hood don't work, likely not wired as I only recall running washer lines and checking those.
I have driven it about 1,500 miles since bought a few years ago. Still has a few kinks to be worked out. Starts and drives, but needs a mechanics eye to make sure it's okay to take across the country. I'm a paint/body and not so engine-guy. Best to have it trailered, anyways, this time of year.

MartiReport says this GT/CS is fairly rare,' one of 4118, and this car has all of it still together!Wheels, gas cap, scoops the whole package.
-----As you can see, the car has been wonderfully restored. I have won numerous numerous awards as you don't see GT/CS's around and this one is stunning. Lime gold paint pops, and almost all original, good parts that were supplied from Shelby back in the day. NOT A CLONE like so so many are. Hood locks are there, seats are in great shape for 50yrs old, interior is sold, good carpet, shifts fine, 289 was re-built prior to my buying but seems strong. I do have the original autolite 2bbl carb, but swapped for a new Holley 4bbl. No one ever notices because it's under the big blue Ford original intake cover, but if you're going concours I'm sure you can switch. I have books that go with it, paperwork from a previous owner, and all the receipts of the thousands I've put into her. PLEASE email for questions. I am located in Lexington, KY 40502
-----After answering dozens of great questions it really depends on what you're looking for out of it. A fun show car that kids, adults and ford fans will love ..great! Concours? Not at this point. We kept the restoration around 30K, not $60,000 so please don't expect perfection. Some parts are missing (the trunk was empty when bought, so I added the liner but still haven't gotten a spare), others just need to be installed/tweaked (like electrical lights and wiring)- but the main "California special" parts, that seperate these models apart, are most importantly there. It's a rust-free CA car, and the registry said less than 3200 are still in existence today (from 4118 before the High Country models). Do some research and you'll learn how neat these mustangs are, and how their history really includes both Ford and Shelby automotive. It's not 100% restored, but definitely past the 'project' phase as I've taken it to shows all across Kentucky. Please let me know if you have any other questions and happy new year!
