It's summer time and that means we are covered up with work. We have a bunch of new inventory and customers cars that we are getting ready to hit the road. We just do not have the time to do this classic Galaxie 500 XL the justice it deserves. Our colleague in California found this car for us and we bought it thinking we would finish it this summer. That was before we got so busy. The mechanical aspects of this car are done already. It fires right up, purrs like a kitten, and runs very well. 390 V8 Fords are underrated for their performance. They are the motor to have in a big ole Galaxie or T-Bird for sure. The Cruise-o-matic transmission was also gone through with the engine and it shifts well. The power steering and power brakes are working well also. We need to install new hydraulic lines for the power top which will work just fine when completed. The power motor is good. All of the top irons look good. Of course it needs the canvasshell, well liner, and snap on boot. The body is pretty straight with a few dings and dents here and there but will not require any unusual prep before paint. The good news is you could pick any color you want. All of the trim is intact. Very important on an XL! It could all be refinished and reinstalled. The bumpers will have to be re-chromed or replaced. The interior will need new seat covers. Oddly enough the dash pan, console, carpet, and front door panes are in outstanding shape. If you stick with black they could be reused. We just redid some XL door panels and it took hours to get all that beautiful trim installed. The chassis is uglier than a mud fence but it is super solid. The suspension feels good but it would depend on your taste in stance whether you want to tackle rearching the leaf springs, replacing shocks, bushing etc. This really is a better car than it appears. It would make a great project for those whom want it to look exactly like they want in terms of leaving it stock, customizing, or restomoding it. I am thinking big wheels, big brakes, Candyapple red paint, and ??? Maybe I have been watching too many "Reality" car shows. On second thought maybe it should be put back the way it was ordered originally. The codes break down like this:
Body color (76B) Galaxie XL Convertible
Color (M) Wimbledon White
Trim (86) Black XL buckets
Date (8D) April 8, 1963
DSO (Z) St. Louis
Axle (1) 3.00:1
Trans (4) Cruise-o-matic
The Z in the VIN designates the Thunderbird 390 cubic inch V-8 315 horsepower at 4600 rpm & 427 ft lbs of torque at 2800 rpm. Impressive for 1963 standards!
This is a great car with massive potential. Make it yours today and we will ship it to you to put the love in it deserves!
