Mercury Comet 1961 Description
I have for sale, a 1961 Comet, 2 door project car. Listed as a Mercury, but in 60 & 61, this vehicle was released by Edsel. This is a 2 year only body style, making it unique and somewhat rare, due to low production numbers. It was Edsel's attempt to enter the compact car market. When the Edsel brand was dropped, the Comet was marketed by Mercury from 1962 on. It was my intention to build a Mild Kustom when I purchased it. Unfortunately, life, age and other priorities have derailed my plans. This car was a running, driving vehicle when I purchased it in early 2016. All lights, signals, horns, wipers, etc worked. Brakes were functional with some new hardware, but further work is needed. A dual chamber master cylinder is included for brake system upgrade. Body of car is straight, (no major dents), but does have areas of bubbling and rust through, (see photos). The rear bumper has been removed and a rolled pan added, giving the car a Kustom look when viewed from the rear against the "Cat Eye" taillights. Trunk floor needs rust repair around the gas tank area. A new, (in the box gas tank is included). All stainless trim is intact, with only a few dings in it. All glass is good, clear and unbroken.
Frame of car is solid, with original undercoating in most areas. Suspension has new shocks added front and rear. It has been lowered, using new coil springs in front and lowering blocks under rear axle. The 175/80/13 tires are all new with zero road miles. Stock, dog dish hubcaps, as well as a set of wire styled hubcaps come with the car.
The interior is intact and complete, but showing wear, as most cars of this age. Dash is nice, has rare radio delete plate. Fronts seats have been replaced with late model buckets and rear seat is stock, as well as the door and rear panels. Floor pans are very solid. Worn carpet is removed and floors have been insulated. Headliner is intact.
The tired 144 inline 6 cylinder and 2 speed automatic trans have been removed. Engine was replaced with a 1968 Mustang, 200 six. Engine upgrades include, a Weber carb and adapter and long tube, dual outlet headers, and fuel pressure regulator. I rode in the vehicle this engine came from and it runs strong. May have camshaft upgrade, but not sure! Would recommend a new gasket set for it due to parts being removed for cleaning and detailing. A C4 automatic trans is also included, (but not installed in car). A new HEI distributor for this engine is included. See photos for parts included with this sale! This is a great chance for you to stand out among the sea of Mustangs and Falcons at your next show or cruise-in! Looking for a 60s Econoline pickup or cargo van.
Please note the following: Vehicle is being sold "AS IS". Buyer is responsible for shipping or transport. Car is listed elsewhere and I may end this auction early. Car has a Massachusetts title, signed by the previous owner! As DMV laws vary from state to state, please check before bidding to see if this will be a problem in your area. I can be reached at (336) 259-9585 for additional info or questions!
