In 1962, ercury touted their mid-model-year introduced S-55 Montereyas a cross between a tiger and a kitten. This particular example is more of a tiger. A full-size car fit for drag strip duty, his mid-year model '62 S-55 Mercurywas special orderedwith the optional $379.90 406 cubic inchTriple Carbureted V8 in addition to the special purpose 4.11 axle. This powerplant was Ford's top performer, lso known as a workhorse. This premium-fuel hungry solid-lifter V8churns out 448 ft-lbs of full-size Merc-moving torque at 3500rpm & 405 horsepower at a substantial 5800 rpm according to 1962 factory specifications. You can even bring up the term "Muscle Car" with the kind of performance and specifications this full-sized 1962 Mercury has.

Little information is available, ut, ccording to vintage Mercury related literature, ess than 125 Mercurys received either the 406/405HP (6V) High Performance Marauder V8 in late '62 or the famous 427 4V available in early '63. This particular Mercury is even more rare thanks to the Special Purpose 4.11 Axle option and 0444 DSO, pecifications I have never personally seen in a vintage Ford or Mercury.

Car Life magazine ran a performance test in their September, 962 issue ona brand new G code Mercury Monterey S-55, etailing the strong performance of the top level Marauder series V8 engine. The special triple carbureted 406 engine propelled the substantial S-55Convertible to 130 mph and 85 mph in the quarter mile with 3.50 gearing. Imagine the E.T.s with the Special Purpose 4.11 Axle? Thisbig car moves. It was touted as a man's car with power steering not even available with the high performance 406/405HP V8. Special heavy-duty suspension and 11-inch drum brakes were standard. The S-55 option was only available on the two door hardtop and the convertible.

Fresh off the Lincoln Mercury showroom, otor Trend would achieve blistering performance with their test '62 Convertible Monterey S-55 equipped with thespecial order406/405HP 3x2 Holley carbureted engine. Traction-limited acceleration to 60 mph took a scant 7.62 seconds while the quarter mile blurred by in 16.5 seconds at 94mph.

From the Motor Trend / October 1962 issue, s authored by Wayne Thomas,

"First Question: Does it go? Answer: YES, n every respect.

One performance gauge, ur quarter-mile time, hile impressive, as not truly indicative of the car's competition capabilities. We ran with two persons aboard, ufflers and no attempt to speed tune. It was in honest street trim, nd just a little extra tinkering would have raised the speed past the century mark and lowered elapsed time substantially. Even so, e had no complaints. We found that there was a best technique in achieving our fastest quarter-mile times We eased off the line at about 2500 rpm, voiding wheelspin as much as possible, nd pressed the accelerator to the floor, ot instantly, ut just fast enough to avoid loading the engine at the low end. After trying various shift points, e settled on 5800 rpm, he horsepower peak. With open headers, he factory recommends shifting at 6200. Oddly enough, he S-55 did not have a tachometer, ne instrument the car really needed to avoid over-revving. We used our portable tach for the tests."

If you are looking for a rare Mercury Muscle Car, hey don't get much rarer. This is a complete running & driving car with correct beige interior, ash, nstruments, nd drivetrain. The body retains all of the original stainless and trim throughout in very good condition as well as original body panels. This is a dry climate California car, here it spent much of time in early years, taying in dry conditions as evident by the superb frame and flooring condition.

Under the hood is the correct 406/405HP (6V) Mighty Marauder V8.

The warranty identification plate is intact and legible, etailing the rare codes such as the 4.11 "SP" special purpose axle, -speed manual transmission, nd of course the brute 406/405HP V8. The finish is Sultana White while the interior color code is beige. Check out the 0444 "DSO"

This is a factory brochure introducing the S-55 Monterey by Mercury, sizzling.

The interior is correct and in very good condition, howing some age but intact throughout. The S-55 was touted as a luxurious cruiser. The speedometer works as does the horn, ights, nterior fan and AM pushbutton radio.

The center console was standard equipment with the S-55 package. The S-55 would later become its own model, eintroduced in 1966 and continuing until '67.

The original door panels are intact left and right. The door undersides are solid original steel.

Check out the vintage trailer brake assembly, till attached.

The engine compartment, n addition to housing the top performer of 1962 Ford engines, he 406/405HP V8, isplays original sheetmetal throughout the firewall, nner fenders and core support. The Holley carburetors are in place along with the special aluminum intake and heavy cast factory breather assembly. The engine itself was last rebuilt in approximately 2007. The car actually runs out strong and drives good. There is a little smoke and we suspect a fresh head/valve job will clear it up or perhaps a complete overhaul. According to the previous owner, oller rockers were also installed during the previous build. These solid-lifter engines live and breathe at upper and mid range RPMS, lthough you can't lug this car in any gear really. The torque is excellent.

This original buck tag is seldom seen, till affixed to the firewall and legible.

The glass is original and shows extremely well.

The wheels are correct KH stamped steel all around with newer radial tires. 11-Inch brakes were standard along with heavy duty suspension for the high performance 406/405HP S-55.

As you can see, he car is in need of a complete paint job and restoration, n excellent start for a rare FoMoCo, ercury, uscle Car enthusiast or collector. Certainly this car has an interesting history, e wish it could talk.

The grille and bumpers show well front to back. All of the original rare brightwork is intact on this car and in exceptional condition. The old paint is tired and in need of complete restoration. The metal itself is excellent, ith a few minor dings, ut original panels. This car is ready for restoration to the level of your choice. The car underwent a mild restoration in 2007 with mechanical work and cosmetics, rimarily seat covers and the 406 engine was previously rebuilt according to the research I've done on the car. Prior to this the car was in a lengthy storage. It is now located near Ennis, exas.

The original glass is intact front to back and in exceptional condition as is the glass stainless surround.

The frame and flooring is solid front to back as is the trunk. This is a California car and it shows. The fuel tank has been previously replaced and the exhaust system was also overhauled with correct components during the mild restoration work approximately 10 years ago.

The pans are original and as solid as can be.
