This 1970 Cougar started out life with an impressive option list that closely mirrors an Eliminator package. With the ‘new for 1970’ 351 Cleveland 4 Barrel engine, lack standard interior and Grabber Blue paint this car had some of the most desirable options. The balance of the Eliminator options have since been tastefully added as well as some very expensive power train modifications.
The body of this Cougar is very solid thanks to a life lived in largely in California. The paint has numerous imperfections and is best described as a 20 footer. Think of this as a handsome prize fighter. If you want a pretty car, lan on a repaint on a good, olid car.
The biggest modifications have occurred under the hood. Long gone is the 300 horsepower 351 Cleveland. In its place is a 461 Cubic Inch Small Block from Bill Mitchell. This engine is based off of the Man O War block from Dart. It uses an Eagle 4340 Crank, agle H-Beam Rods, ahle Forged Pistons, ohn Kasse Cylinder Heads, delbrock Super Victor Intake Manifold, 50cfm Mighty Demon Carburetor, SD Ignition and MORE. For free breathing a set of 1 ¾” Hooker Ceramic Coated Headers and 3” Exhaust have been installed. It is backed up by a well built C4 from Performance Automatics with a reverse pattern manual shift valve body. A Currie 9+ unit is filled with a Detroit Locker spinning 4.11 gears. This combination with 1 5/8” headers and 2 ½” exhaust ran 11.20’s at 119mph. The car has not been ran at the track with the 1 ¾” headers and 3” exhaust.
It should run mid 10’s in the 125mph range now.
The suspension has been upgraded with Competition Engineering components including Sub-Frame Connectors, ear Drag Shocks and Slide-A-Link Traction Bars. Up front a set of Edelbrock IAS shocks were installed. With Mickey Thompson ET Drags, his combination netted a 1.52 60 foot time.
The wiring system uses a Painless wiring system. This is a simple system with rocker switches to power the fuel system, ccessory system, gnition and starting. Massive Flex-A-Lite dual electric fans keep the engine cool. The wipers and lights are actuated on the dash. While this car has headlights the doors need to be opened manually which is easy as it uses the factory safety springs to hold them open.
The fuel system has a 12 gallon cell in the trunk as well as an electric high volume fuel pump with 7/16” hard line.
This car was built to be a weekend fun toy that you could drive to the track, ip off some crazy passes then cruise home. It has the hardware to do it confidently too. If you were to add up the costs to just buy the parts you would exceed the asking price several times.
