Mercury Montego 1973 Description
1973 Montego GT, 351 Cobra Jet, 4 speed, 3.50 rear. I recently acquired this car from a private collection. The car underwent a complete frame off, rotisserie, nut and bolt restoration several years ago. The exact date is not known. The car was restored with attention to detail and originality. The drivetrain is believed to be numbers matching. I was told it was rebuilt and numbers matching. I was able to make out a few numbers on the block which did match the vin however I could not confirm every number due to paint build up on some of the numbers. The paint is stunning, itis absolutely beautiful. No dry spots, no orange peel, no runs. I could only find three flaws in the paint. The bottom of the passenger door has a small bubble and crack in the paint, the passenger A piller has a small crack in the paint and the drivers door jam has some cracking in the paint over the seam sealer. The trunk, floor pans, and under the hood are all detailed and very nice. All the gauges are functional, the radio works, the rim blow horn works, the interior is in excellent condition. The bumpers are better than new, all the bright work has been restored and is in excellent condition.I have the Marti report for this car. The two obvious variations are the addition of a period correct AM/FM radio and the addition of magnum 500 wheels. There were 4,464 Montego GTs built in 1973, 1,120 were Q code 351 Cobra Jet cars, 197 were 4-speed cars. Roughly about 4% were 4-speeds. When looking at references for pricing keep in mind that 96% of the cars were automatics therefore most of the pricing is based off automatic cars. This is a factory 4-speed car. You had to order the Q code option to get the 4-speed option.
The car starts right up, idles well, accelerates well, stops well, sounds amazing. There is an exhaust leak at the passenger manifold that I will fix if the buyer wishes. Also, at steady speed the car has a slight bucking thatimproved when I adjusted the timing and improves as it warms up. I was told its carb related. It's more of anuisancethana problem. The Goodyear polyglas white letter tires seen is some of the pictures are not included in the sale. The tires were not safe to drive on the road. The car currently has radial tires on new reproduction magnum 500 wheels.
Please look over the pictures and call with any questions. This is a very nice muscle car, its rare and in excellent condition. Tanners Classic and Performance Motors, Mechanicsburg, Pa. Buy-Sell-Trade-Consign classic and performance automobiles specializing in Ford and Mercury muscle cars.
