Mercury Comet 1965 Description

Mercury Comet went through a lot of redesigns throughout the 60's but in 65 they arrived at a style that totally encompassed the muscle car look that had come into popularity at that time. 10,900 were made in 1965 and this is the 404 version which received a higher trim level and other upgrades not found on the 202 series. This car was originally light metallic blue with a 289 V8 and automatic transmission from the factory. It appears to have spent most of its life in Texas or in drier climates as the car was completely rust free and very straight when the current owner purchased it for $200.00 in Arlington, Texas back in 1998. Since then the car has undergone a complete and lengthy restoration by the owner and a select group of artisans. Since completion the car has been driven less than 10 miles and the engine is not even broken in yet. An upcoming move is requiring the owner to reduce his current level of cars so make his loss your gain!

As previously mentioned, the body was very rust free and straight when the car was purchased. It had only the factory paint which was worn and dull but void of any cracks. It was decided not to totally strip the paint in these set of circumstances, but prepare the existing body without going down to bare metal. No panels or floors were replaced. Being an original V8 car it had the needed torque boxes as a part of the unit construction. Subframe connectors were discretely added as were traction bars for the rear. No other structural components were added. The car is as nice underneath as it is topside. All the existing trim was in great condition as was the glass except the front windshield which was replaced with a new unit. The trim needed slight dent removal as well as polishing, which was done. One taillight housing needed to be replaced with a better unit and the dash pot metal and plastic trim were all refurbished and re-plated and/or painted. Everything on the car was either replaced or refurbished. All rubberseals were replaced as well as window whiskers. The car was repainted in a beautiful Black paint that contrast with the chrome nicely. It has a great stance on American Racing 16" billet wheels.

The engine was professionally built by Charles Eller, a local well known engine builder. It is a 302, slightly bored with new TRW forged pistons. The crank was slightly turned 10/10. No expense was spared on the engine components. It has a full roller Comp cam setup, in the 290 designation range. It has roller rockers, a high volume oil pump, slightly larger pan, full MSD system, TrickFlow Twisted Wedge aluminum heads yielding compression in the 10 point range, coated headers, Weiand aluminum intake and Holley double pumper. The fuel pump is mechanical. The water pump is a high performance aluminum unit and the radiator is a cross flow aluminum unit with integral fan shroud. The engine is very responsive and on top of that sounds amazing! The transmission is a “built” C4 with a performance valve body and a 3000 stall converter. It is shifted with a B&M floor shifter. The rear end is an 8” Auburn TrackLok assembly wit 4.62 gears. The front brakes are discs from a Mercury Monarch and it has drums in the rear.

The interior is mostly stock but with ’68 Mustang low profile headrest type seats. It is complete in all grey fabric and vinyl. The wheels are American Racing 16” billets.
