Pontiac GTO 1968 Description
NO RESERVE!
1968 Pontiac GTO, Numbers matching, original.1968 Motor Trends car of the year!
I have decided to sell my GTO to make room for another project.I have had this car about 4 years and have enjoyed it quite a bit.
Here is the story as it was told to me.The car was purchased in San Antonio in 1968 and shortly after the original owner passed away. His widow didn’t drive and parked the car outside and the weather took its toll.A close friend of the original owner finally talked her into selling him the car and this is who I purchased it from.He did a frame off restoration on the car in the early 90’s.The previous owner drove it to car shows and cruises for years and then parked it with a cover in his garage and this is how I found it.He was 70 at the time and wasn’t able to drive it much anymore and his 2 daughters didn’t want anything to do with it.After I bought it, I had to go through and do all new brakes, wheel bearings, tires, fluids, fuel pump, and sending unit. The only big Item I had to replace was the radiator as the original wasn’t cooling well and the radiator shop ruined the original rodding it out.I replaced it with an aluminum “Be Cool” radiator that looks and fits exactly like the original but works much better.I also replaced the water pump with a “Flow-Cooler” high flow pump – I didn’t want to mess with an overheating car in the Texas summer. The only items under the hood that aren’t original are the carb and choke. The carb was replaced with an Edelbrock performer with electric choke just for drivability but I still have the original Quadrajet. The car still has the points distributer and it works just fine.During the restoration the engine and drivetrain were removed and freshened up, painted and re-installed but not rebuilt and I was told by the previous owner that the mileage is original (69,890) and I have no reason to doubt that. When I got the car fax on it 4 years ago, you could see where he registered it every year and the mileage only went up a thousand or two miles.I purchased it with 64K I believe and have put on about 7k miles over the years.
I have pictures from that restoration and it looks like the only real rust they had to repair was around the rear window which is very common for this model car.Everything else looks excellent, there is no rust on the floor boards, doors, fenders, etc. Now, there is surface rust on some things like nuts and bolts as seen in the pictures but no structural rust that I can see.
Included:
2x 1968 Texas license plates.
Build sheet and window sticker from the Pontiac Historical Society.
1x Original 1968 Motor Trend magazine where they announced the GTO as the Car of The Year.
1x Original 1968 GM Shop service manual.
1x Chilton manual
Here is my brutally honest assessment of the car. Most of these issues I have to point out to people for them to notice, but I want to be as honest as possible. This car usually wins a trophy at the car shows and nearly causes accidents whenever I drive it because of all the rubber necking and thumbs up!
Body –
·Frame off restoration in early 90’s, repainted original color, Flambeau Burgundy.
·No structural rust that I know of, pictures of floors and trunk below.
·Surface rust on nuts and bolts and some on trunk floor as seen in pictures.
·Paint looks great from 10 feet but has its blemishes, its 20+ years old. There are scratches in what looks to be the base coat but wouldn’t show up in pictures. There are a couple chips and cracks and looks like someone buffed through a spot behind the rear tire and a small area on the drivers side on the bottom but no one can tell unless I show them. The paint on the Endura bumper is starting to crack which is quite common. There seems to be a scratch on the passenger’s side door that wasn’t touched up well but again, no one notices unless I show them. There is one SMALL dent in front of the side marker light on the driver’s side – the camera wouldn’t capture it.All the door jambs, hood jambs, truck jambs look great and there is no overspray. If I were to keep it, I'd have someone re-shoot the paint.
Engine –
·Original, numbers matching 400ci engine.Picture of numbers below.
·69K miles, never rebuilt, runs GREAT!Lots of power and hasn’t given me any trouble.
·All stock except for new carburetor and choke.I have original quadrajet still.
·Original power steering, and A/C car.A/C still works and is still R-12.Doesn’t cool like a new car but defiantly helps in the summer.Very expensive option in ’68.
·Has power brakes but wasn’t original according to the build sheet.Previous owner told me the original owner had them installed at the dealer and that makes sense as it looks like all stock parts and looks exactly like one that is factory.Has all new pads, shoes, rotors, wheel cylinders, master cylinder and booster.Stops way better than a manual brake car but its still a 50 year old design.
·Cooling system was upgraded with an aluminum “Be Cool” OEM radiator.Looks and fits exactly like original but works much better.High flow “Flow Cooler” water pump and thermostat installed.I drove this car in Texas during the summer and it never overheated.Installed a temperature gauge under the dash just to make sure.
·Engine is starting to mark its territory on the garage floor. After parking, it drips a couple drops of oil.I noticed some drips on the power steering pump when I was taking the underside pictures too, never noticed that before.I keep it cleaned up underneath so it hasn’t been a problem.
·Transmission is a Th400 and works well with no issues.I believe it’s the original but I'm not sure if the transmissions were stamped with the VIN# too.If you know where the number may be, let me know and I'll take a picture.
Interior –
·Interior is in excellent, original condition.
·Only thing new (replaced during the restoration) seems to be the carpet and headliner.Seats, doors, dash look all original.
·Drivers side seat has some ripping as shown in the picture.
·Chrome on dash looks warn.
·Everything works.Still have AM radio blasting through the center dash speaker.throw a Bluetooth speaker on the back seat when I go on longer trips.
·I purchased new window rubber and felt for both sides and installed the drivers side.
This is all I can think of right now.If you have any questions or want specific pictures just let me know.If you are in Oklahoma and want to see the car please let me know.I am listing this car locally so I reserve the right to cancel the auction at any time.Thank you for looking.
