Studebaker Coupe Express 1947 Description

Auction is for a 1947 Studebaker M5 Coupe Express Pick up truck.
Studebaker used the Coupe Express name on the 1947 truck and dropped it after the 1947 year. Truck isequippedwith the original flat head 6 cylinder engine with a 3 speed overdrive transmission. The body is in very goodconditionexceptfor some rust in lower part of front fenders. A pair of very good used rust free steel fenders are included with the truck. Truck could use a paint job but is presentable like it is. This is not a show truck in its current condition. It is a very good driver quality truck that cold easily be made into a show truck with a little paint and cleaning. Interior is very good, no rips or tears on seat. Headliner is complete but is sagging in several places, could be repaired if needed.
Check out the outside sunvisor. This was an aftermarket item and has been correctly installed on this truck. Also truck comes with the original deluxe wheel covers and beauty rings.
This truck was restored about 15 to 20 years ago and is showing some wear. Truck drives very well and we've taken it on several trips with no problems. Engine starts right up on it's original 6 volt electrical system and has never left me stranded. Engine was rebuilt about same time truck was restored and runs great. Does not use any oil and does not leak. Engine does not overheat going down the road or in traffic. This is the deluxe version and had a heater, clock, fog lights, bumper guards, hood ornament and radio. Clock and radio do not work.
When i bought truck I did several upgrades to make it safer and better to drive at highway speeds. The truck came with a floor mounted 3 speed transmission and had a top speed of around 50 mph. I had the transmission modified by a well know Studebaker transmission expert to make it an overdrive unit but keep the floor shift. All new electrics for the overdrive were installed. I also wanted to make it safer so I installed a dual master cylinder like modern cars. All brake wheel cylinders were either rebuilt or replaced. Brakes work great. Truck can cruise along comfortably at about 65 mph and stops like it should. Speedometer is off since never got around to changing speedometer gear. Reads faster then you are going. Tires are the original bias ply and my next step was to replace them, recommend new owner do this. They have plenty of tread but are old. The truck has a 5 x 5 bolt pattern so later model Chevy rims will fit it.
Paint is a little rough in few spots. The lower area of both front fenders are rusty and have been repaired previously. Two very good used steel fenders come with truck. The cab and doors and bed are all very good with no apparent rust. Mileage reads 63,082 which I believe is correct. No idea of mileage on engine since rebuild. Engine was recently tuned up with valves adjusted and replaced tail pipe and muffler. Runs very good and has adequate power for 6 cylinder.
Serial number shows this to be an early production run. In 1947 the first serial number was 19053, so this was the 2,916th truck made after the war. As a result it had the hood ornament which was only on the earlier trucks. A total ofapproximately23,000 trucks were made in 1947 by Studebaker. Not sure how many are left since most of these trucks spent a hard life on farms. This one is a survivor and could be restored or drive like it is.
