Willys Pickup 1960 Description

I bought this very clean Willys about 6 years ago for my wife. She drove it some, but wasn't happy with the steering. It is the original steering box, and works perfectly, as it should for having somewhere around 40K miles total. Problem is that it's around 4 turns lock to lock. I think it's fine, but then again, I don't get to drive the critter. It goes straight down the road, with no shake, wiggle, wobble, bounce, shimmy, pull or play. I just didn't want to change it from the original. It is a joy to drive, especially with the overdrive, and the perfect running 302. The engine was completely rebuilt before installation, and not driven until I purchased it, due to a broken front main leaf spring. The 4-wheel drive system all works great. I had Boise Spring (the best) rebuild the front springs, and install new hardware. The brake system is all new, and uses a hydrovac for assist. The wheels are widened originals, and are shod with new tires. My wife drove this puppy approximately 500 miles, then I installed a new speedo. The mile since (124) were put on at Bonneville last month. One of the windshields is cracked, as is the rear glass. The side windows are fine, and function perfectly. The truck runs cool, with a recent radiator, and a very functional fan shroud. The body has never had significant damage, only minor dents and dings. There is NO rust through, and only surface rust where the paint is gone. The original color is red/white, which was very nice on these trucks. The previous owner worked for a lumber company in Northern Calif, as a maintenance mechanic. The company color was orange, so he painted the critter (poorly), and got paid for the mileage. The rack is very heavy built, and is removable. The fuel tank is approx 30 gallons. Here's a couple more details......I had a question about the front shocks.....or lack thereof. Please read the answer below. Also, there is not a proper boot on the shifters, so it does get fumes into the cab. I haven't driven it enough to worry about it 'till I went to Bonneville. I simply stuffed a towel around it. I installed a new gauge cluster, but kept the old gauges, which work. The speedo worked, but got weird, so I suspect it's the cable. Something to remember, I believe the Pickups used the T-90 tranny, and they have straight cut gears, so they sing to ya. Personally, I don't mind this, but on a long drive, it could be a bother. There is no synchro in first, which you get used to.
